Beyond Boundaries draws on Tapestry’s 100th-anniversary Armistice Day tour that concluded on November 11, 2018 at the National Gallery in Washington DC. Tapestry shapes this new program inspired by early 20th-century impressionists. After WWI, the influence of the impressionists spread throughout the world. Bartok wrote “Debussy’s great service to music was to reawaken among all musicians an awareness of harmony and its possibilities.” Tapestry’s program travels beyond borders and throughout time to explore themes of love, beauty, and peace.
Tapestry, a Boston-based ensemble of women’s voices, made its debut in 1995 with the performance of Steve Reich’s Tehillim at Jordan Hall in Boston which The Boston Globe deemed “a knockout”. Critics hail their rich distinctive voices, their “technically spot-on singing” and their emotionally charged performances. The Cleveland Plain Dealer describes Tapestry as “an ensemble that plants haunting vibrations, old and new, in our ears”.
Their concert appearances include the Utrecht Early Music and the Maastricht Musica Sacra Festivals, Regensburg’s Tage Alter Musik, the Flanders Festivals of Gent and Brussels, Moscow Conservatory, Le Donne in Musica, Rome; Jordan Hall, Boston; Frick Collection, NY; Harvard U., Da Camera of Houston; the National Gallery, Denver’s Newman Performing Arts Center; Stanford University and many others. More recent appearances include the Library of Congress and New York City’s Frick Collection with their program “American Dreams,” a performance at the Bucerius Foundation in Hamburg with works from the 13th to the 15th centuries broadcast by the Norddeutsche Radio, the unveiling of a mini-opera based on Tibetan folklore written for Tapestry by Sheila Silver that had its world premiere at the new Ottawa festival Music and Beyond, was performed at the Freer and Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC and, and subsequently toured North and South America. In addition to Lessons of Darkness,, Tapestry is touring Starry Night, a program designed for the Wilson Observatory and the Da Camera Society Concert Series in Los Angeles. .
Tapestry has made 4 recordings with Telarc International: Angeli, Music of Angels; Hildegard von Bingen: Celestial Light; Song of Songs – Come into my Garden; and The Fourth River, winner of Chamber Music America’s Recording of the Year and two recordings with German Label, MDG: Faces of a Woman and Sapphire Night, winner of the the Echo Prize.
Laurie Monahan worked with Thomas Binkley and the Studio der Fruhen Musik at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland. She went on to co-found Ensemble Project Ars Nova (P.A.N.) and collaborate on the seminal recordings of Hildegard’s music by Sequentia. An active performer of early and modern music, she teaches at Berklee College of Music and formerly at the Longy School of Music. Cristi Catt’s appearances include Ensemble PAN, Revels, Boston Camerata, HourGlass, Le Bon Vent, and Blue Thread. Her focus on connections between medieval and folk traditions led to research grants to Portugal and France and a wide range of performance projects. The author of The Kinesthetic Singer: Lessons on Singing from Yoga and Basketball, she teaches at New England Conservatory and Berklee College of Music. Daniela Tošić toured with the Belgrade-based ensemble Renaissance in the former Yugoslavia. She has worked with Ensemble P.A.N., Revels, Zamir, Jubal’s Lyre, La Donna Musicale, Rumbarroco, Balmus, and The Blue Heron Renaissance Choir. A founding member of medieval world fusion ensembles HourGlass and Telltale Crossing, she served as a guest teacher for Longy’s Medieval Institute and is currently presenting The Immigrant Experience with marimbist Sylvie Zakarian. Nikola Radan is a flautist, composer, songwriter, producer, and professor of music at the University of Arkansas. Nikola is the founder of the critically-acclaimed world music ensemble, BalMus, cofounder of the internationally-awarded Clash of Civilizations music project, and has recently started a new multicultural music project called Blue Thread, together with Cristi Catt. He appears with Daniela Tosic’s Immigrant Experience concerts. Pianist and composer Arsentiy Kharitonov is a first prize winner of the Franz Liszt International Piano Competition (US) and the Rachmaninoff Competition (Russian Federation). He tours worldwide including performances at Carnegie Hall, Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, the Belarus Symphony, and major halls in Shanghai, Beijing and Seoul. He has recordings with Toccata Classics and the Hartshom Classical label and teaches at the University of North Texas.
